Marathon Ashland Tanks

One plan provides different coatings solutions for oil company’s tanks

Sherwin-Williams coated more than 1,200 petroleum product tanks from 88 Marathon Ashland light product and asphalt terminals across the United States.  Tim Blair, Marathon Ashland’s corrosion specialist recognizing that the tanks were built at different times, coated with different products, and were behind on maintenance, requires a superior maintenance-level program.

The project included site survey of more than 1,200 Marathon Ashland tanks, full removal and repainting many of the tanks which totaled almost 30,000 square feet in surface area.  The tanks were shot or grit blasted to 2.0 to 3.5 mil anchor profile, then coated with a three-coat Sherwin-Williams epoxy system.

The Marathon Ashland project not only addressed the current refurbishment needs but also provided Marathon with a long-term maintenance and site survey program to manage the company’s on-going needs.  “We’ve got a 10-year plan now, and we’ve laid the foundation for record keeping that will project the plan well beyond 10 years,” said Blair.   “We can also forecast our coatings-related expenditures into the future.  There’s a definitely a level of comfort in that.”
