Port of Oakland Container Cranes

Protecting the Port of Oakland Container Cranes Presented Unique Challenges
In 2005 when the imposing post-Panamax container cranes arrived in the Port of Oakland, traffic in both the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges had to be disrupted to ensure that the cranes passed through them safely.

As tall as a 24-story building and weighing approximately 1,500 tons each, the $7 million container cranes are among the largest in the world in the category of super post-Panamax cranes. The cranes were built to handle the new generation of wider container vessels, with a boom outreach 23 containers wide and the ability to load or discharge more than 35 cargo containers per hour.

Commissioned by the Port from Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Co (ZPMC), the largest manufacturer of port side cranes, the harsh coastal environment needed a stringent solution to protect the cranes from the elements. The Port of Oakland turned to Sherwin Williams company for the coating applications.
