Chesapeake Bay Bridge

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is one of the world’s largest bridge-tunnel complexes and is a modern engineering wonder, utilizing Sherwin-Williams coatings.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is considered the world’s largest bridge-tunnel complex and a modern engineering wonder that measures 28.4 km and consists of 3.65 km of low-level trestles, almost 3.2 km of causeway, four man-made islands and 8.85 km of approach roads.

This complex project included the complete removal and recoating of the truss bridge and ramps. The exposed carbon steel was abrasive blast-cleaned to a near white finish, Sa 2 ½ . The project required containment of existing lead-bearing coatings so the profile depth had to be controlled. The structural steel was coated with Zinc Clad IV, Recoatable Epoxy Primer, and Block-Plex Acrylic Latex Block Filler White.
